Overview

A high-quality, pre-owned processing system comprising a Flavourtech Centritherm Evaporator and an Anhydro MS400 Spray Dryer, ideally suited for small-scale production, pilot plants, and R&D applications across the food, dairy, chemical, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical sectors.

Manufactured and installed in 2007, the system has seen limited use, with only circa 1,058 operational hours, and remains in excellent condition. Previously operated within pharmaceutical and cosmetic environments, it has been maintained to a high standard. The combination of gentle evaporation and controlled drying temperatures makes this system particularly well suited for handling heat-sensitive products, while also offering excellent versatility for processing materials such as dairy products, food ingredients, plant-based extracts, proteins, enzymes, and specialty chemicals.

The Flavourtech Centritherm Evaporator provides rapid, low-temperature concentration of liquids under vacuum conditions, preserving product quality and functionality, with an approximate infeed capacity of 80 litres per hour. This is paired with the Anhydro MS400 Spray Dryer, which efficiently converts liquid feed into powder, offering an approximate throughput of 60 litres per hour.

Together, this system provides a complete solution for concentration and drying at pilot or small production scale. It is particularly valuable for process development, enabling operators to evaluate product behaviour and suitability for spray drying prior to full-scale production.

Anhydro MS400 Spray Dryer
Key Features
  • Designed for R&D and small-scale production
  • Gentle, low-temperature drying process
  • Capable of both spray drying and spray crystallisation
  • Flexible use across food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries
Typical applications

The MS400 is suitable for processing a wide range of materials, including:

  • Dairy products (milk powders of varying compositions)
  • Food ingredients (coffee extract, cheese, eggs, bouillon)
  • Vegetables and plant-based products (banana, tomato, soy, pectin)
  • Proteins and enzymes
  • Chemicals and extracts (tannins, fungicides, vitamins)
  • Industrial materials (soap powders, plastics, blood products)

The plant is also well suited for spray crystallization, i.e. atomization ofeasily fusible products (e.g. fat and washing powders) without using heated drying air.

Working principle

The spray dryer operates by conveying a liquid feed – such as a solution, slurry, or paste – from the feed vessel to an atomisation system, where it is dispersed into fine droplets within the drying chamber. Atomisation can be achieved using a centrifugal disc, two-fluid nozzle, or high-pressure nozzle, allowing flexibility to suit different product and process requirements.

Simultaneously, drying air is heated and introduced into the chamber in a controlled flow. The atomised droplets come into direct contact with the heated air, resulting in rapid evaporation of moisture and the formation of dry powder particles.

The dried particles are then carried by the airflow to a cyclone separator, where the powder is efficiently collected, while the exhaust air is discharged. This controlled, continuous process ensures consistent drying performance and enables precise control over particle characteristics and product quality.

Flavourtech Centritherm Evaporator
Key Features
  • Centrifugal thin-film evaporation (~0.1 mm film thickness)
  • Extremely short residence time (<1 second)
  • Operates under vacuum for low-temperature processing
  • Steam-heated rotating cone system for efficient heat transfer
  • Scalable design with stacked cones for increased capacity
  • Integrated Clean-In-Place (CIP) system
  • Hygienic, service-friendly construction
Working Principle

The Centritherm evaporator uses centrifugal force to distribute the product as a very thin film across the surface of rotating, steam-heated cones. This thin-film formation allows for extremely rapid heat transfer and near-instant evaporation under vacuum conditions, significantly reducing thermal exposure.

The concentrated product is continuously discharged via a paring tube, while vapours are directed to an condenser. Steam circulates within the hollow cones, condensing and being efficiently removed to maintain consistent heat transfer. This process ensures gentle, efficient concentration while preserving the integrity of heat-sensitive products.
